Muscle disorders can significantly impact a person's quality of life. The concentric needle electrode is a key diagnostic tool used to get a detailed look at what's happening inside the muscle. During an EMG test, the electrode is inserted into the muscle to record its electrical activity both at rest and during voluntary contractions. In a healthy muscle, there's a certain "electrical silence" when it's at rest. With a muscle disorder, however, abnormal spontaneous activity might be detected. When the patient contracts the muscle, the concentric needle captures the shape and size of the motor unit action potentials (MUAPs). These signals are like the muscle's "electrical fingerprint." Any changes in this fingerprint can indicate the presence of a myopathy or other muscle disease, providing the essential data needed for a correct diagnosis and treatment.
